FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nov. 17, 2004
The Fort Myers/Cape Coral, Fla., market ranked first in the Milken Institute's 2003 list of the top 200 U.S. cities for job creation. Four other Florida cities also placed in the top 10, including West Palm Beach/Boca Raton, Daytona Beach, Sarasota/Bradenton and Fort Lauderdale.

Ross Duvall of the Milken Institute attributes the state's booming job market to tourism as well as to the construction and health-care sectors, which have been fueled by incoming retirees.
The employment sector in No. 2-ranked Las Vegas also is buoyed by tourism and residential building. Both it and Phoenix, which holds the No. 3 slot, also can thank their low property prices for continuing to attract both businesses and workers.
Two other notables -- Riverside/San Bernardino, Calif., at No. 8 and Monmouth/Ocean, N.J., at No. 10 -- were singled out for offering less expensive housing relative to the nearby major cities of Los Angeles and New York, respectively. In both cases, according to Duvall, home prices were about half the national median of $220,000.
Duvall noted that all of the cities in the top 10 are reaping the benefits of business startups, low business costs, an educated workforce and the migration of retirees -- all of which puts upward pressure on demand for local services.
