Demographics

Cape Coral is the most populous city between Tampa and Miami. As of April 2009, Cape Coral was the 9th largest city in Florida by population and the 3rd largest geographically. More than 60 percent of the population is between the ages of 15-64 and residents under 25 outnumber residents over 65. Southwest Florida's 18-24 age group is growing at a faster rate than the state of Florida and the United States.

The racial makeup of the city was 88.3% White, 3.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% Asian or Pacific Islander, 4.1% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Of Hispanic origin were 14.1% of the population. The diversity index was 40.8.

In 2009, the population consisted of 21.9% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 29% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.7 years. 29.5% of the households had children under the age of 18 living with them. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.89.

The population density was 1,479/mi² (571/km²). There were 5,1642 housing units at an average density of 434.0/mi² (167.6/km²). The median income for a household in the city was $56,051. The per capita income for the city was $26,758. Poverty Line is $21,800 for family of 4. About 7.8% of families and 7.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.

Projections for 2014 estimate 203,500 people, 80,598 households and 58,060 families residing in the city.

Climate

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration classifies Cape Coral as a subtropical climate. The area averages 355 days of sunshine each year but experiences precipitation on 145 days per year. While the summers are very warm, humid and rainy, the winters in Cape Coral are dry with moderate temperatures. Cape Coral receives about 54 inches of rain each year, the majority of which falls from May to September. During the summer months, afternoon rains are heavy yet brief. The city is affected by the annual hurricane season, which begins officially on June 1 and continues through November.[14]
